European Budget Phone Slump Boosts Carrier Sales as Apple Takes the Lead

Europe’s smartphone market experienced another difficult quarter in 2026, but the decline was not evenly distributed across sales channels. While smartphone shipments through retailers dropped sharply, mobile carriers performed comparatively better as consumers continued to favor higher-end devices.

According to Counterpoint Research, Europe recorded around 35 million smartphone shipments in Q2 2026. Overall smartphone sales declined by about 8% year over year, while the open retail market suffered a larger 11% decline. In comparison, smartphone sales through mobile operators fell by only 4%.

Budget Phones Face Growing Pressure

The major factor behind the changing market dynamics is the ongoing increase in memory component costs. Rising memory prices have placed additional pressure on manufacturers and have particularly affected affordable and entry-level smartphones.

Budget phones are commonly sold through independent retailers, making the decline in low-cost smartphone demand especially damaging to the open market. Carrier sales, meanwhile, tend to have a stronger focus on premium smartphones and devices purchased through contracts.

As a result, the weakening budget segment has indirectly helped mobile operators maintain a larger share of smartphone sales in Europe.

Apple Overtakes Samsung in Carrier Sales

One of the biggest changes during Q2 2026 was Apple's performance in the carrier channel.

Apple became the leading smartphone brand among European mobile operators, capturing 37% of carrier smartphone sales. Samsung followed with a 33% share. This represents a significant change compared with the previous year, when Samsung held the leading position.

Apple's strong position reflects the continuing premiumization of Europe's smartphone market, where consumers are increasingly purchasing more expensive devices, often through carrier contracts.

vivo and Motorola Also Show Strong Growth

Apple and Samsung were not the only major brands benefiting from the shift toward carrier sales.

vivo and Motorola recorded some of the strongest growth in Europe's operator channel. Counterpoint identified both companies as important contributors to the changing carrier market, with strategic partnerships and positioning helping them expand their presence.

This suggests that carriers could become increasingly important for smartphone brands looking to reach European customers as the low-end retail market remains under pressure.

Carrier Channel Could Continue Gaining Share

Counterpoint Research expects the operator channel to continue gaining share over the coming quarters. The research firm believes that ongoing pressure on the lower end of the smartphone market will continue to favor carriers, whose sales are more heavily weighted toward premium devices.

Independent retailers could still fight back through increased promotions and discounts. However, higher component costs and weaker demand for budget smartphones may continue to make the market challenging for manufacturers and retailers alike.

What This Means for Europe's Smartphone Market

The Q2 2026 results highlight an important shift in how smartphones are being sold across Europe. Rather than simply seeing every part of the market decline at the same rate, premium-focused carrier sales are proving more resilient than traditional retail channels.

With Apple now leading the carrier segment and Samsung close behind, competition among premium smartphone brands is likely to remain intense. Meanwhile, brands focused heavily on affordable devices could face greater challenges if memory costs and other component prices remain elevated.

For consumers, this could eventually mean fewer low-cost options and more emphasis on carrier financing and contract-based smartphone purchases.
