WhatsApp is reportedly preparing a major change to the way users access Channels. WhatsApp is working on moving Channels directly into the Chats tab on both Android and iOS.

Currently, users need to open the separate Updates tab to find and follow Channels. Under the planned change, Channels could appear alongside regular conversations in the Chats section, making them easier to access without switching between tabs.

The change could also lead to the removal of the Updates tab. WhatsApp may use the space to introduce a new Contacts tab, where users could see contacts who are currently active.

WhatsApp May Move Channels to Chats Tab, Replace Updates With Contacts

The app is testing different ways to integrate Channels into the Chats tab. On Android, users who already follow Channels may eventually see a prompt asking how they want those Channels to appear.

One option would place followed Channels directly in the chat list. Another option would automatically archive them for users who do not want Channels mixed with their personal conversations.

WhatsApp is currently testing three different layouts for Channels in the Chats tab. The company is expected to choose the final design based on feedback and testing results before making it available more widely.

The same change is also being developed for iPhone users. However, the iOS version is still under development and is not yet available for beta testing.

Updates Tab Could Be Replaced

Moving Channels out of the Updates tab could make the existing section unnecessary. WhatsApp could therefore replace it with a Contacts tab.

The new section is expected to provide a dedicated place for users to see which contacts are active. This would represent another change to WhatsApp’s navigation system as the company continues to reorganize its main features.

However, the final design has not been confirmed yet. WhatsApp is still testing the new layout, so the interface could change before the feature reaches regular users.

Channel Status Feature Also Expanding

Alongside the navigation changes, WhatsApp is expanding Channel Status to more users on Android and iOS.

The feature allows Channel administrators to post temporary photo and video updates that disappear after 24 hours. Followers can view these updates through the channel interface, the Updates section, and the channel information screen.

WhatsApp decides which Channels receive access to the feature, and administrators cannot manually request activation.

Availability

The Channels-in-Chats feature is still being tested and may not be available to all beta users. The iOS version is currently under development, while Android users may see the feature as WhatsApp expands its testing.

WhatsApp has not announced when the redesigned navigation will be released to everyone. The company could also make further changes based on testing before the final version rolls out.

For now, users will need to continue accessing Channels through the existing interface until WhatsApp officially introduces the new design.
