The government has announced new steps to improve social and economic protection for senior citizens, including a digital verification facility that will allow pensioners to complete their proof-of-life verification from home.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif shared the details in his message on the International Day of Older Persons, observed on October 1. He said the government remains committed to improving the welfare and protection of older citizens across the country.
Under the new digital verification system, elderly pensioners will be able to complete their life certificate or proof-of-life verification without repeatedly visiting government or bank offices. The initiative will make the pension process easier and more convenient, particularly for senior citizens who may face difficulties travelling to offices.

The government is also working to expand the coverage of the Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI). The move is intended to extend social security benefits to a larger number of eligible workers and older citizens.
In addition, the government is considering increased financial support for deserving senior citizens through the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP). The initiative is part of broader efforts to provide financial assistance to vulnerable sections of society.
Healthcare for older citizens is another area of focus. The government is working with provincial administrations to improve specialised healthcare services for senior citizens. Efforts are also underway to expand health insurance coverage so that elderly people can have better access to medical treatment.

The government has also included the implementation of the United Nations’ Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA) among its priorities. Institutional reforms under a coordinated policy framework are being pursued to strengthen policies related to the rights, welfare and social protection of older people.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also called on young people to respect and support senior citizens. He stressed the importance of caring for older family members and ensuring that they receive the assistance they need.
The prime minister further urged federal and provincial governments, civil society organisations and the private sector to work together on initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life of senior citizens.
The announced measures focus on reducing administrative difficulties for pensioners, improving access to financial assistance and healthcare, and strengthening broader social protection for Pakistan’s ageing population.
