Strange Scaffold Revives Cancelled Tactics Game as Gods With Badges

A cancelled tactics game has been given a second chance thanks to indie developer Strange Scaffold. The studio has announced Gods With Badges, a narrative-driven tactical game that builds on the foundations of a previously cancelled project originally developed by Artificer.

The game was revealed during the latest Triple-I Initiative showcase and is currently planned for release on PC through Steam in 2027.

From Hard Justice to Gods With Badges

Gods With Badges began life as a project called Hard Justice, created by strategy developer Artificer. Rather than allowing the cancelled project to disappear completely, Strange Scaffold acquired development materials and is reinterpreting the concept through its own creative direction.

Strange Scaffold describes the project as one of its most ambitious games yet. The studio says it is taking the game's subject matter seriously while building something new from the original foundation.

The project is also connected to Strange Scaffold's Project Share initiative, which encourages developers to exchange technology and explore alternative approaches to sustainable game development.

A Tactical Game About Power and Law Enforcement

Gods With Badges focuses on the power, social dynamics and institutional pressures surrounding law enforcement.

Players take control of Harrow McClellan, a disgraced police officer who returns to her former post after a scandal. Her reputation becomes an important part of the game's story, with players able to either embrace that reputation or attempt to move beyond it.

The game combines narrative decisions with tactical combat. Choices made during conversations, arrests and encounters can affect Harrow's relationships with colleagues, citizens and the institutions around her.

Explore the Dystopian City of Scarhelm

The game's setting is Scarhelm, a dystopian futuristic city that players can explore through open hubs.

While patrolling the city, players can investigate complaints, search for evidence, seize contraband and explore locations ranging from public areas to darker back alleys.

These activities are designed to connect exploration with the game's broader narrative and decision-making systems.

Turn-Based Combat With Consequences

When situations become dangerous, Gods With Badges switches to isometric turn-based combat.

Players will need to use cover, rescue hostages and decide how much force to use during encounters. The game also presents difficult decisions about whether to execute suspects or attempt to secure arrests while putting officers at greater risk.

Equipment and officer loadouts can also be customized, giving players different strategic options during missions.

The Bodycam Mechanic Adds Another Layer

One of the game's more unusual mechanics involves Harrow's body camera.

Players can temporarily disable the bodycam to unlock alternative tactical possibilities and special dialogue options. However, doing so also removes the public record of what happens during that period.

This mechanic is intended to reinforce one of the game's central themes: how authority, accountability and personal choices interact.

Release Date and Platform

Strange Scaffold currently plans to launch Gods With Badges in 2027 for PC via Steam. A specific release date has not yet been announced.

The game is being positioned as a narrative tactics experience rather than a traditional military strategy title, combining turn-based battles with exploration, dialogue choices and consequences.

What Makes Gods With Badges Interesting?

The project's unusual history could make it especially interesting to strategy fans. Instead of starting entirely from scratch, Strange Scaffold is resurrecting and reinterpreting material from a cancelled Artificer project.

The studio is also bringing its own style to the concept, following games such as I Am Your Beast and Space Warlord Baby Trading Simulator.

Final Thoughts

With its combination of turn-based combat, investigative gameplay and branching choices, the game could offer something different for strategy fans when it arrives on PC in 2027.
