Apple’s Smart Home Push: New Hub, Cameras, Doorbell, Lock & More

Apple’s Smart Home Push Could Bring New Cameras, Doorbells and More

Apple appears ready to make a much bigger push into the smart home market, with a growing lineup of connected devices reportedly being developed alongside a new Siri-powered home hub.

The company has already built a strong ecosystem around the iPhone, Apple TV, HomePod and Home app. Now, Apple reportedly wants to expand that ecosystem with products ranging from security cameras and video doorbells to smart locks and thermostats.

Recent reports indicate that Apple has worked with LG Electronics on several of these products, potentially allowing Apple to expand its smart home lineup without manufacturing every accessory itself.

Apple and LG Reportedly Working Together

According to recent reporting, LG has been developing several smart home products with Apple's involvement. The devices are expected to carry the LG brand, while Apple would help shape their design, features and integration with its ecosystem.

The reported lineup includes a video doorbell, indoor and outdoor security cameras, a smart thermostat, temperature sensor and smart deadbolt lock.

LG would reportedly handle manufacturing and product support, giving Apple a way to expand its smart home ecosystem while avoiding the cost and complexity of producing every accessory itself.

New Smart Home Hub Could Be the Centerpiece

At the center of Apple's renewed smart home strategy is a dedicated smart home hub.

The device, reportedly code-named J490, is expected to feature a display and work as a central controller for connected devices around the home. Apple could position it as a combination of a smart-home control panel, digital assistant, communication device and entertainment screen.

Reports suggest users could place the device on a countertop or mount it on a wall. It could also recognize different household members and provide personalized information through voice and facial recognition.

The device is expected to rely heavily on Apple's newer AI-powered Siri.

Siri AI Could Be the Key

Apple's improved Siri is reportedly one of the most important parts of its smart home strategy.

Instead of simply responding to basic voice commands, the newer Siri is designed to understand personal context and perform more complicated actions across Apple's ecosystem.

In a smart home environment, that could allow users to control accessories, check calendars, communicate with family members, access information and create automations using natural language.

Apple is reportedly planning to introduce its new smart home hub alongside an updated HomePod mini and a new Apple TV.

HomePod Mini Could Finally Get an Upgrade

The HomePod mini has remained largely unchanged since its 2020 debut.

Reports indicate that Apple is preparing a new version with an upgraded processor designed to support its latest Siri capabilities. The overall design may remain similar, although new colors and internal improvements are reportedly planned.

The updated speaker could become another important component of Apple's smart home network, working as both an audio device and a home hub.

New Apple TV Could Join the Strategy

Apple is also reportedly preparing another generation of the Apple TV 4K.

The exterior design may not change dramatically, but the new model is expected to receive a faster processor capable of supporting Apple's newer AI features.

There have also been reports of improved connectivity, potentially including Apple's newer networking technology and support for Wi-Fi 7 and Thread.

This would make Apple TV more than an entertainment device, allowing it to play a larger role in controlling connected accessories throughout the home.

Smart Locks, Cameras and Doorbells

Apple's reported partnership with LG could significantly expand the number of accessories compatible with its smart home platform.

Among the reported products are:

  • LG Video Doorbell Wired
  • LG Floodlight Cam
  • LG Outdoor Cam Plug-In
  • LG Indoor Cam Plug-In
  • LG Smart Deadbolt Lock
  • LG Smart Thermostat
  • LG Temperature Sensor

Regulatory filings have reportedly revealed some information about these products, although detailed specifications and images remain restricted until a later date.

Smart Lock Could Use Ultra-Wideband

One particularly interesting product is the reported LG smart deadbolt.

The lock reportedly supports Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. If integrated with Apple's ecosystem, UWB could potentially enable more precise proximity detection.

That could allow compatible devices to recognize when an authorized person approaches the door and potentially make automatic unlocking possible.

Apple already uses UWB technology in a range of its products, including certain iPhone and Apple Watch models.

Matter and Thread Could Make the Ecosystem More Flexible

Apple is also expected to rely heavily on Matter and Thread, two important standards in the modern smart home industry.

These technologies can make it easier for devices from different manufacturers and platforms to communicate with one another.

The reported LG products are expected to support combinations of Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Thread and Matter, which could make them compatible with a broader range of smart home setups.

This is important because Apple's smart home ambitions will have to compete with established ecosystems from Amazon and Google.

Apple Wants to Catch Up With Amazon and Google

Amazon and Google have spent years building their smart home platforms around Alexa and Google Assistant.

Apple, meanwhile, has had HomeKit and the Home app for years but has not achieved the same level of presence in the smart home market.

The new strategy could change that by combining Apple's hardware, software, AI and third-party accessories into a more comprehensive ecosystem.

Apple's advantage could be its enormous installed base of iPhones, Apple Watches, iPads and other devices.

When Could Apple Launch Its New Smart Home Products?

Reports indicate that Apple is preparing a major smart home announcement for October 13, 2026, with the new smart home hub, HomePod mini and Apple TV expected to be central to the launch.

However, the LG-branded accessories are reportedly expected to arrive later rather than launching alongside Apple's first smart home hardware.

Apple has not officially confirmed all of these products or their launch plans, so specifications, pricing and availability could still change.

Apple’s Smart Home Future

Apple's reported smart home expansion could become one of the company's biggest new hardware strategies in years.

A Siri-powered home hub combined with upgraded Apple TV and HomePod devices could provide the foundation, while cameras, locks, thermostats and doorbells could expand Apple's ecosystem into more areas of the home.

If Apple can successfully combine its new AI capabilities with reliable smart home hardware, it could finally become a stronger competitor to Amazon and Google in the connected-home market.
