Helldivers 3 Isn’t Coming Anytime Soon as Arrowhead Focuses on Helldivers 2

Fans hoping for Helldivers 3 may have to wait a very long time. Arrowhead Game Studios appears to have no plans to move on from Helldivers 2 anytime soon, with the developer choosing to keep expanding its current hit rather than asking players to start over with another sequel.

Johan Pilestedt, Arrowhead's chief creative officer, explained that making a traditional sequel would essentially reset the experience for the community. Instead of throwing away the momentum built around Helldivers 2, the studio wants to continue improving the game and adding new content.

Why Arrowhead Isn't Rushing Into Helldivers 3

According to Pilestedt, a new sequel would force players to leave behind much of what they have built in Helldivers 2.

For a live-service game, that can be a major problem. The success of Helldivers 2 depends heavily on its active community, with players bringing friends into the game, sharing gameplay moments and creating memes that keep the title in the spotlight.

Arrowhead believes that community activity is one of the game's biggest strengths.

Rather than restarting that cycle with Helldivers 3, the studio would rather continue giving players reasons to return to Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 2 Is Still the Main Priority

Arrowhead is reportedly putting the vast majority of its development resources into Helldivers 2.

Around 95% of the studio is currently working on the game, while only a small team is focused on the company's next project.

That approach suggests Arrowhead sees plenty of room to expand Helldivers 2 before seriously considering another numbered entry.

The strategy also fits the broader trend in the gaming industry, where developers are increasingly looking at how to keep successful multiplayer games active for longer rather than immediately replacing them with sequels.

A Helldivers 3 Sequel Would Need to Be Very Different

Pilestedt hasn't completely ruled out Helldivers 3. However, he believes a future sequel would need to be different enough from Helldivers 2 for both games to successfully exist alongside each other.

That is a significant requirement.

If Helldivers 3 simply offered a slightly upgraded version of the same experience, players could have little reason to abandon the existing game. In that situation, Helldivers 2 would effectively become the biggest competition for its own sequel.

For now, Arrowhead believes improving Helldivers 2 makes more sense than splitting its player base between two similar games.

What About Arrowhead's Next Game?

While most of the studio remains focused on Helldivers 2, a smaller group is working on something new.

The company has previously discussed concepts and ideas for future projects, but details about its next game remain limited.

That means Arrowhead fans have two things to watch: the continued evolution of Helldivers 2 and whatever the studio eventually decides to reveal as its next major project.

Helldivers Movie Is Also in Development

Although Helldivers 3 isn't on the immediate horizon, the franchise is expanding in another direction.

A Helldivers movie is currently in development, giving the series an opportunity to reach an audience beyond video games.

Actor Alan Ritchson is set to lead the film, replacing Jason Momoa.

The movie could give the franchise another major boost while Arrowhead continues developing the game that started it all.

Helldivers 2 Isn't Going Anywhere

For now, fans shouldn't expect to see Helldivers 3 anytime soon.

Arrowhead's current strategy is focused on keeping Helldivers 2 fresh, maintaining its active community and continuing to build on the game's momentum.

That could eventually change. If Arrowhead creates a sequel that feels fundamentally different from Helldivers 2, there may be a reason for both games to exist side by side.

Until then, the future of the franchise appears to be centered on Helldivers 2 rather than Helldivers 3.
