The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Preview Reveals Dandelion's Story, New Region and Chain Weapon
CD Projekt Red is preparing to expand the world of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with Songs of the Past, an upcoming expansion that will take Geralt of Rivia on a new adventure through an unexplored region called Letten. A recent gameplay demonstration at Lucca Comics & Games offered a closer look at the expansion, including its mysterious storyline, new monsters, combat mechanics, and the deeper role of one of the franchise's most recognizable characters, Dandelion.
During the event, attendees also spoke with Lead Level Designer Miles Tost and Lead Writer Paula Mejsner, who shared insights into the creative direction behind the expansion. Their comments suggest that the new adventure will explore parts of the Witcher universe that previous games have not fully addressed.

The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Introduces the New Region of Letten
The gameplay demonstration begins with Geralt waking up in Letten after a night of celebration. Wearing traditional local clothing, he experiences a disturbing nightmare involving Dandelion, a mysterious well, thorn-covered surroundings, and the scent of violets.
Initially, Geralt treats the experience as an ordinary dream. However, things become more complicated when he visits Dandelion's family estate for breakfast.
There, he meets Lilla, Dandelion's cousin, who believes the famous bard has disappeared. Their grandmother dismisses her concerns, but Geralt's description of his nightmare immediately catches Lilla's attention.
The two decide to investigate an old legend involving a cursed well surrounded by a mysterious garden of thorns. According to local stories, the location has the power to drive people mad.
The journey introduces players to Letten's countryside, local traditions, and an entirely new environment to explore.

Dandelion Takes Center Stage in the New Expansion
One of the most interesting aspects of Songs of the Past is its focus on Dandelion.
Although he has appeared throughout The Witcher franchise, the expansion's Lead Writer, Paula Mejsner, believes there is considerably more to his character than previous games have explored.
She explained that Dandelion is not simply a humorous bard known for drinking and romantic adventures. His intelligence, eloquence, personal history, family relationships, and childhood experiences deserve greater attention.
The expansion will therefore introduce players to his family, childhood friends, and the place where he grew up.
Interestingly, Dandelion does not appear directly during the demonstrated gameplay sequence. Instead, players begin discovering his story through conversations with people who knew him before he became the famous bard.
This storytelling approach could give players a different understanding of his personality and the events that shaped his life.

Geralt's Friendship With Dandelion Gets More Attention
The new storyline is not exclusively about Dandelion. According to Mejsner, exploring the bard's past will also reveal another side of Geralt.
The two characters have shared many adventures, but their friendship has not always received the same attention as Geralt's monster-hunting activities and major conflicts.
Songs of the Past aims to explore their relationship more deeply, presenting Geralt not only as a professional Witcher but also as a loyal friend.
This could provide a more personal narrative experience, particularly for players who have followed their relationship throughout the series.
New Chain Weapon Expands Geralt's Combat Abilities
The gameplay demonstration also revealed an important addition to Geralt's combat arsenal: a chain weapon.
Lead Level Designer Miles Tost explained that the chain introduces a new weakness-based combat mechanic. Monsters will have specific vulnerable points that Geralt can exploit to perform special finishing moves.
The weapon is also designed to improve combat against multiple enemies, giving players another option when facing groups of monsters.
Interestingly, the chain has a connection to the franchise's history. It appeared in the introductory cinematic of the original The Witcher game, but was never developed into a full gameplay feature.
Songs of the Past finally brings the concept into actual combat.
Tost also confirmed that the weapon will not be restricted to the new region. Players will be able to use it throughout the wider game, meaning it will remain available even after leaving Letten.
New Monsters and Dark Environments Await Players
Letten initially appears to be a beautiful region filled with bright skies, colourful flowers, sparkling water, and peaceful surroundings.
However, the atmosphere changes dramatically as Geralt approaches the mysterious well.
The environment becomes darker, with dead trees, thorn-covered paths, and landscapes that contrast sharply with the colourful countryside.
The demonstration also showcased unusual nature-inspired enemies. Some creatures resemble giant flowers emerging from the ground and attacking players with powerful area-of-effect abilities.
One particularly interesting enemy appears to be constructed from wood and can reshape its body into different weapons and defensive structures, including a spear and shield.
The demo concludes with Geralt entering the mysterious well, which leads into an enormous underground cave. The final moments introduce a frightening creature made of branches and wood, leaving the encounter unresolved.
Polish Literature and Shakespeare Influence the Story
Songs of the Past is also drawing inspiration from several literary traditions.
Paula Mejsner explained that her approach to writing the expansion is influenced by Polish romanticism, Polish postmodernist poetry, and classic works of literature.
She specifically mentioned Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream and Macbeth as creative references.
These works offer contrasting themes and atmospheres that help shape the expansion's storytelling.
Mejsner also has a personal connection to The Witcher franchise. Before working on Songs of the Past, she wrote her academic thesis about The Witcher 3 expansion Hearts of Stone.
She described joining the development team as a dream come true and emphasized the importance of maintaining the storytelling standards established by the original game.
CD Projekt Red's lore team is also working closely with the writing department to maintain consistency with the books, previous games, and established franchise history.
What Else Can Players Expect From Songs of the Past?
Beyond the main storyline and new combat mechanics, Letten will introduce its own cultural identity.
The development team has considered how the region's natural resources influence everyday life, including local food, ingredients, and traditional drinks. Honey and hops are among the examples mentioned during the discussion.
These environmental details could help make Letten feel like a believable part of the Witcher universe rather than simply another map filled with quests and enemies.
The combination of new landscapes, regional traditions, monsters, and character-driven storytelling suggests that CD Projekt Red wants the expansion to offer more than just additional gameplay.
The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Looks Promising
The Lucca Comics & Games demonstration offered an encouraging look at what CD Projekt Red is preparing for The Witcher 3.
The focus on Dandelion gives the expansion an opportunity to explore an important character in greater depth, while the chain weapon introduces a new dimension to Geralt's combat abilities.
Letten also appears to offer a distinctive setting, combining beautiful countryside with mysterious and dangerous locations.
Although several questions remain unanswered, the developers' comments indicate that the expansion is being approached with considerable attention to the franchise's established lore and storytelling.
For longtime fans, Songs of the Past could provide another meaningful reason to return to Geralt's world while waiting for the next major chapter in The Witcher series.
