Apple CarPlay has quietly become a hub for AI chatbots. Thanks to a new API introduced with iOS 26.4, developers can now bring voice-based conversational apps directly to your car's dashboard. Several major AI assistants are already available, letting you ask questions, get recommendations, and continue conversations hands-free while you drive.

Which Chatbots Work with CarPlay?

The roster of supported AI apps has grown quickly. As of September 2026, the following major chatbots now offer CarPlay integration:

• ChatGPT (OpenAI) – The first to arrive, it lets you start a "New Voice Chat" from the CarPlay home screen and speak naturally.

• Perplexity – An AI-powered search and chat assistant.

• Grok (xAI) – Elon Musk's conversational AI.

• Meta AI – Meta's assistant, integrated with its ecosystem.

• Claude (Anthropic) – Recently added, with a voice-first interface that shows recent chats and lets you resume them.

• Microsoft Copilot – The latest addition, which requires a subscription to work with CarPlay.

Additionally, if you have an iPhone 15 Pro or later running iOS 27, Apple's own Siri AI is available as a dedicated CarPlay app, though it remains in beta and is being rolled out in waves.

Notably, Google Gemini is currently the biggest holdout. It has not yet released a CarPlay-compatible app, and no timeline has been announced.

How to Get Started

Before you hit the road, make sure your iPhone is running iOS 26.4 or later. You can check by going to Settings > General > Software Update. Then, open the App Store, tap your profile icon, select App Updates, and tap Update All to ensure you have the latest versions of your AI apps.

Once your iPhone is connected to a CarPlay-equipped vehicle, the compatible apps will appear on your CarPlay home screen. Simply tap the icon and start a new voice conversation or pick up an existing one. All interactions are voice-only for safety—you cannot type or view visual content while driving.

Safety and Limitations

Apple enforces strict rules for these apps. They function purely as voice assistants; you cannot use them to control your car's settings, start navigation, or manage other iPhone apps. For those functions, you'll still need Siri or Apple's built-in apps.

While these chatbots can be entertaining and useful for quick questions or suggestions, remember that AI isn't perfect. Answers can be inaccurate, and some conversations may be distracting. It's always best to double-check important information and save complex discussions for when you're not driving.

By default, new CarPlay apps are added to the end of your home screen. You can customize the layout on your iPhone to move your favorite AI tools to a more convenient spot.

As more developers adopt the API, expect the list of CarPlay-compatible chatbots to keep growing—though Gemini's absence remains a notable gap for now.
