Google Brings Dreambeans AI App to India With Personalized Stories

Google is expanding its experimental Dreambeans AI app beyond the United States, choosing India as its first international market. The app is designed to create personalized visual stories and recommendations based on information users choose to connect from their Google accounts.

Dreambeans is available on Android and iOS, giving users a new way to interact with their personal digital information without having to constantly type prompts into an AI chatbot.

What Is Google Dreambeans?

Dreambeans is a Google Labs experiment that uses AI to create a personalized stream of stories around a user's interests, activities and everyday life.

Instead of waiting for a user to ask a question, the app proactively generates content using information from connected Google services. Depending on the permissions granted, this can include data from services such as Gmail, Calendar, Google Photos, YouTube, Search and Gemini.

Google introduced Dreambeans in June as an experiment designed to provide a limited collection of personalized stories rather than another endless scrolling feed.

The stories can include AI-generated illustrations, recommendations and additional information that users can explore through the app.

India Is Dreambeans' First International Market

Google says India was selected as Dreambeans' first market outside the United States because of the country's extensive use of Google's services.

The app currently supports a wide range of Indian languages alongside English. Reports say the India rollout includes languages such as Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali and others, although users currently choose one language for their generated stories rather than combining multiple languages in the same story.

That limitation could be particularly noticeable in India, where users frequently switch between languages during everyday conversations.

Dreambeans Can Turn Your Digital Activity Into Stories

One of Dreambeans' most unusual features is its ability to connect information from different Google services.

For example, information from a calendar event could potentially contribute to a recommendation, while information from Gmail or Photos could provide additional context. Google says users decide which services they want to connect, rather than giving Dreambeans automatic access to everything.

The app can also use Google's AI capabilities to create visual content around those stories. Google has added support for its Veo video-generation technology in selected stories, allowing some generated images to be animated.

Privacy Is an Important Part of the Experience

The personalized nature of Dreambeans also creates an obvious privacy challenge.

The more Google services a user connects, the more information the AI can potentially use to personalize its recommendations. Gmail messages, calendar events, photos and search activity can contain highly personal information.

Google says users can choose which services Dreambeans connects to and can disconnect them later. Users can also delete their Dreambeans data. The company has also said that users can ask Dreambeans to avoid certain topics.

Dreambeans is currently intended for personal Google accounts, rather than enterprise accounts, and generated stories are designed to remain private to the account holder.

Dreambeans Could Become More Than a Story App

Google appears to have bigger plans for Dreambeans if the experiment proves successful.

The company is exploring ways to make the experience more actionable, potentially allowing recommendations generated by Dreambeans to lead directly to useful actions.

That could eventually turn the app from a passive source of personalized stories into something closer to a personal AI assistant that understands a user's interests, plans and preferences.

For now, however, Dreambeans remains an experimental product, and its long-term direction will depend heavily on how users respond to the concept.

Google Is Testing a Different Kind of AI Experience

Dreambeans is interesting because it takes a different approach from conventional AI chatbots.

Instead of starting with a blank text box and asking users to provide a prompt, Google wants Dreambeans to use existing context to decide what information might be useful or interesting.

That approach could make AI feel more proactive, but it also makes privacy, transparency and user control increasingly important. The challenge for Google will be finding the right balance between useful personalization and giving users confidence that their private information is being handled appropriately.

For now, India's launch gives Google an opportunity to test that balance in one of the world's largest and most diverse internet markets.
