Android Auto Could Add Work Mode for Your Work Profile

Android Auto could soon become more useful for people who use their phones for both personal and professional tasks. A hidden Work Mode feature discovered in a recent Android Auto build suggests Google may be preparing support for Android Work Profiles on car displays.

The feature was spotted during an analysis of Android Auto version 18.0.664204. Although the Work Mode option can reportedly be activated, it is not functional yet, and Google has not announced when—or if—it will become available to users.

If Google eventually releases the feature, Android Auto could provide better access to work-related apps and notifications while driving.

What Is Android Auto Work Mode?

The discovered feature appears as a Work Mode tile with a briefcase icon. It is believed to be connected to Android's existing Work Profile system, which separates work apps and data from a user's personal information.

Work Profiles are commonly used by businesses to manage applications and corporate data on employees' phones. Work apps are displayed separately and usually carry a small briefcase badge.

The same separation could eventually appear on the Android Auto interface.

However, the current Work Mode tile does not perform any useful action, meaning the feature remains experimental.

Why Android Auto Could Support Work Profiles

For professionals who spend a lot of time driving between appointments, access to work-related information from the car could be convenient.

For example, supported work applications could potentially provide access to:

  • Work-related calls
  • Meeting information
  • Business notifications
  • Navigation connected to work appointments
  • Other approved workplace applications

The feature could be particularly useful for employees who keep their professional accounts inside a managed Work Profile.

At the same time, Google would need to carefully control what these applications can do while the vehicle is moving.

Microsoft Teams and Google Meet Already Have Some Limitations

Work Profile restrictions currently affect how conferencing apps work with Android Auto.

Microsoft says Teams can support audio calls and meetings through Android Auto, but its Android Auto integration does not work when the app is installed inside a managed Work Profile.

Google Meet has a different limitation. An active Work Profile call can appear on the vehicle display, but upcoming meetings and call history from that work profile are not shown.

A dedicated Android Auto Work Mode could potentially address some of these limitations, although Google has not confirmed exactly how the feature would work.

A Work Mode Toggle Could Help Users Disconnect

Interestingly, Work Mode could be useful for the opposite reason as well.

Instead of simply bringing more office activity into the car, a future Work Mode control could potentially make it easier to switch work-related apps and notifications on or off.

Android already allows users with a Work Profile to pause work applications. When work apps are paused, their notifications are also stopped while personal applications continue working.

If Google brings similar controls to Android Auto, drivers could potentially decide when they want work information displayed on the vehicle's screen.

However, the current Android Auto Work Mode discovery has not demonstrated that these controls will actually be included.

Not Every Work App Will Automatically Appear

Even if Google launches Work Profile support, drivers should not expect every business application installed on their phones to suddenly become available through Android Auto.

Android Auto limits what applications can do while a vehicle is moving, primarily to reduce driver distraction. Employers can also control which applications are available inside managed Work Profiles.

This means the final list of supported work applications could depend on both Google's Android Auto rules and an organization's IT policies.

On company-managed devices, administrators may also have additional controls over Work Profile usage.

Google Has Not Confirmed the Feature Yet

The biggest point to remember is that Android Auto Work Mode is not an officially released feature at this stage.

The discovery comes from examining Android Auto's software and activating a hidden tile. Such APK or code discoveries can provide clues about features Google is developing, but they do not guarantee that those features will eventually reach the public version of the app.

Google has not announced a release date for Work Mode or confirmed exactly what functionality it will provide.

Could Android Auto Become More Work-Friendly?

Android Auto has gradually expanded beyond basic navigation, calls and music. Google has introduced more apps and features while continuing to place restrictions on what drivers can access while driving.

A dedicated Work Mode would represent another step in that evolution.

For professionals, it could make commuting and driving between appointments more convenient. But there is also a clear trade-off: adding more work information to the dashboard could make it harder for some drivers to mentally switch off after working hours.

For now, Android Auto Work Mode remains a promising but unfinished feature. If Google decides to release it, the final implementation—and the apps it supports—will determine whether it becomes a genuinely useful productivity tool or simply another source of notifications behind the wheel.
