iPhone Duo Screens Are Cracking in the Same Spot, Raising Early Concerns

Apple’s first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, has only recently started reaching customers, but some early owners are already reporting a serious display problem.

Several users have shared photos and reports online showing cracks or damaged pixels on the phone’s inner folding display. What makes the reports particularly concerning is that the damage appears to be occurring in almost exactly the same location near the center of the fold.

Affected displays reportedly develop a bright white line or band of pixels extending outward from the folding area. In one case shared on Reddit, an owner said they noticed something unusual inside the hinge while opening the phone. The display problem appeared just hours after the device was purchased.

Apple reportedly replaced that particular device at an Apple Store, suggesting that the company is willing to address individual cases. However, it remains unclear whether the problem is isolated or could affect a larger number of iPhone Duo units.

iFixit Points to a Possible Hinge Stress Area

The repair experts at iFixit may have identified a possible explanation after examining the iPhone Duo's internal construction.

According to iFixit, the damage seen in user reports does not appear to be directly located where the display cable travels through the hinge. Instead, it seems to occur slightly lower, where multiple structural edges come together and influence how the extremely thin display is supported during folding.

One possibility is that the center support structure underneath the display does not move downward far enough when the phone is folded. This could potentially create a concentrated stress point in the display near the location where users are reporting failures.

Because foldable displays repeatedly bend during everyday use, even a small mechanical weakness can potentially place additional pressure on one section of the panel.

Foldable Display Problems Aren't New

Display failures have been one of the biggest challenges for manufacturers developing foldable smartphones.

Samsung experienced a similar situation with the first-generation Galaxy Fold in 2019. Some review units developed display problems after debris entered the hinge area or caused additional pressure on the flexible panel.

Modern foldable phones have become significantly more durable since then, but their displays remain much more complicated than those used in conventional smartphones.

Apple's approach is also highly complex. The company says the iPhone Duo's hinge contains more than 100 components, while its folding display consists of multiple extremely thin layers designed to move and flex together.

Is This a Manufacturing Defect?

At this stage, there isn't enough information to determine whether the iPhone Duo screen failures represent a widespread manufacturing defect, a design limitation or isolated incidents.

It is also unknown whether the affected phones belong to a particular production batch.

Apple has not publicly confirmed a broader problem with the iPhone Duo's folding display. If more owners report failures in the same location, however, the company may face increasing pressure to investigate whether the hinge and display-support system needs to be redesigned or adjusted.

For Apple, the first generation of any new product category comes with significant engineering challenges. The iPhone Duo appears to demonstrate just how difficult it can be to combine an ultra-thin flexible display with a sophisticated folding mechanism.
