WoW Forever’s Excavation Site Dungeon Brings a New Threat to the Wetlands
World of Warcraft: Forever is giving players another reason to explore one of Classic Azeroth’s familiar areas with the addition of Excavation Site, a new five-player dungeon located in the Wetlands.
Rather than simply recycling an existing Classic location, the dungeon expands on the mysterious activity surrounding Whelgar’s Excavation, introducing strange phenomena, Titan technology and dangerous creatures for players to investigate.
Blizzard lists Excavation Site for characters around levels 24 to 29, placing it firmly in the middle of the game's leveling journey.
A New Dungeon Hidden Near Whelgar’s Excavation
The Wetlands have always been an important part of the early World of Warcraft experience, but Excavation Site gives players a new destination to explore around the area.
The entrance is located near Thelgen Rock and Dun Algaz, above Whelgar’s Excavation. Blizzard's description hints that something unusual is happening in the region, with mysterious mist and flashes of light appearing around the mountains.
What initially looks like another archaeological expedition quickly turns into something much more dangerous.
Titan Constructs Are Part of the Mystery
One of the biggest attractions of Excavation Site is its connection to Titan technology.
Players will encounter malfunctioning or errant Titan constructs alongside dangerous wildlife. The combination gives the dungeon a different atmosphere from many of the more traditional fantasy locations found throughout Classic Azeroth.
The setting also fits naturally into Warcraft's longstanding interest in ancient Titan facilities and the secrets buried beneath the world.
Instead of introducing an entirely disconnected location, WoW Forever is using an existing part of Azeroth to expand the game's lore.

Where Does Excavation Site Fit Into Leveling?
Excavation Site is designed for characters between levels 24 and 29.
That makes it one of the earlier new dungeons introduced by WoW Forever, following the lower-level Hall of Thanes and Ruins of Lordaeron.
The level placement should also make Excavation Site useful for players looking to upgrade their equipment while progressing through the Wetlands and surrounding areas.
WoW Forever Adds Nine New Dungeons
Excavation Site is only one part of Blizzard's larger dungeon expansion for WoW Forever.
The game launches with nine new five-player dungeons, covering different level ranges from 13 through 60. They are spread across the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor.
The launch lineup includes:
- Hall of Thanes — Levels 13–18
- Ruins of Lordaeron — Levels 15–20
- Excavation Site — Levels 24–29
- City of Dalaran — Levels 28–33
- The Drowned City — Levels 35–40
- Krol'dok Stronghold — Levels 40–45
- Alcaz Prison — Levels 48–53
- Blackmaw Hold — Levels 55–60
- Shaper's Terrace — Levels 58–60
This approach allows Blizzard to add new dungeon experiences throughout the 1–60 leveling journey instead of concentrating the new content only at maximum level.
Why Excavation Site Could Be Important
The most interesting aspect of Excavation Site may not simply be the enemies players fight inside it.
The dungeon gives Blizzard an opportunity to explore one of Warcraft's recurring themes: ancient technology that was never meant to be disturbed.
The Wetlands already contains several clues about Azeroth's ancient history. By introducing strange lights, mysterious mist and unstable Titan constructs, WoW Forever can build a new story around an area that longtime players already recognize.
It also demonstrates Blizzard's broader design philosophy for WoW Forever: expand the original Azeroth experience without abandoning the world players already know.
WoW Forever Is Expanding Classic Azeroth
The Excavation Site is a good example of what makes WoW Forever different from simply replaying the original World of Warcraft.
Players still travel through familiar zones, but new dungeons, quests and locations provide additional reasons to revisit them.
For longtime WoW players, that could make familiar areas feel less predictable while still maintaining the classic game's overall identity.
With nine new dungeons covering almost the entire leveling experience, Excavation Site is just one piece of a much larger expansion to Azeroth's original adventure.
