OpenAI Launches GPT-6 Sol and Luna with Better Performance and Lower Costs

OpenAI has introduced two new AI models, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, as part of its latest effort to make advanced artificial intelligence more affordable. The new models focus on improving performance while reducing the cost of using them.

The launch comes only a few weeks after OpenAI introduced GPT-6 Astra. With GPT-6 Sol and Luna, the company is now targeting users who need strong AI performance without paying the higher costs associated with its more advanced models.

OpenAI has also significantly reduced the API prices of the new models. GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna are both 50% cheaper to use compared with GPT-5.6 Sol and GPT-5.6 Luna. This could make them more suitable for developers and businesses that rely heavily on AI services.

According to OpenAI’s internal testing, GPT-6 Sol delivers stronger results across a wide range of tasks. The company claims that the model can outperform Claude Opus 5 while costing much less to operate. For demanding tasks such as coding, OpenAI says GPT-6 Sol can match Claude Fable 5.1 while requiring a lower budget.

However, comparisons with competing models are still developing. Anthropic has also introduced newer versions of its Claude models with improvements in speed and cost. As a result, broader independent testing will be needed to determine how GPT-6 Sol performs against the latest competition.

Accuracy is another major focus of the new models. OpenAI says GPT-6 Sol makes around half as many mistakes as GPT-5.6 Sol in its internal evaluations. GPT-6 Luna also reportedly improves factual accuracy compared with its predecessor.

GPT-6 Luna appears to benefit particularly from higher reasoning effort levels. This allows the model to spend more processing power on difficult tasks, which can improve the quality of its responses.

The two models are now being rolled out in ChatGPT Work and Codex. They are available to ChatGPT Pro, Plus, Business, Enterprise, and Edu subscribers. Access is being introduced gradually, so some users may not see the models immediately.

Users on the Free and Go plans can also access GPT-6 Luna through the ChatGPT desktop app. OpenAI is expected to expand availability as the rollout continues.

With GPT-6 Sol and Luna, OpenAI is placing greater emphasis on the balance between performance and cost. The combination of lower API prices, improved accuracy, and stronger performance could make the new models useful for a wider range of AI tasks.
