LG's New FLiPP OLED Technology Could Make Future TVs Brighter and Last Longer

OLED televisions are popular for their deep blacks, excellent contrast, and vibrant colours. However, the technology still has challenges, particularly gradual pixel degradation and the risk of permanent screen burn-in.

LG Display believes its new manufacturing technology could help address some of these limitations. Known as FLiPP, the process is designed to improve how OLED pixels are produced, potentially creating displays that are brighter, more energy-efficient, and longer-lasting.

Although the technology is not yet available in consumer televisions, its reported improvements could have a significant impact on future OLED displays.

What Is LG's FLiPP OLED Technology?

FLiPP stands for FMM-Less innovative Pixel Patterning. It is a new OLED manufacturing method developed by LG Display that removes the need for conventional Fine Metal Masks (FMM).

Traditional OLED manufacturing uses extremely precise metal masks to position red, green, and blue organic materials within individual pixels. These masks help create the pixel patterns required for displays, but they also introduce manufacturing limitations.

Large metal masks can become difficult to align because of their physical properties. They can sag under their own weight, potentially causing alignment problems and colour-mixing defects. Producing different mask sizes and resolutions can also increase manufacturing complexity and costs.

FLiPP takes a different approach. Instead of relying on traditional metal masks, LG Display applies RGB materials and uses photolithography to create precise pixel patterns. This process uses controlled light exposure and etching to remove unwanted material.

The result is a manufacturing method that gives LG greater flexibility when producing OLED panels.

LG Claims 2.4 Times Longer OLED Lifespan

One of the most interesting claims surrounding FLiPP is its potential impact on OLED durability.

According to LG Display, panels manufactured using FLiPP can achieve approximately 2.4 times the lifespan of conventional FMM-based panels under identical testing conditions.

The company also reports improvements in other areas:

  • 1.6 times higher brightness: The technology can produce brighter displays.
  • 2.4 times longer lifespan: OLED panels can achieve significantly improved longevity.
  • 13% lower power consumption: The panels can use less energy under the stated comparison conditions.
  • Approximately 55% better aperture ratio: A larger proportion of the pixel area can be used for light emission.

These figures are based on LG Display's reported comparisons, not independent guarantees for future consumer televisions.

Could FLiPP Finally Solve OLED Burn-In?

Burn-in remains one of the concerns associated with OLED technology. It happens when pixels experience uneven wear over time, potentially leaving permanent marks or brightness differences on the display.

Because OLED pixels produce their own light, the organic materials gradually degrade with use. Reducing the amount of effort required to produce a particular brightness level could help improve their longevity.

FLiPP aims to improve pixel efficiency by increasing the light-emitting area. This could allow OLED panels to deliver better brightness while placing less demand on their light-emitting materials.

However, FLiPP does not completely eliminate OLED burn-in. Uneven pixel wear can still occur, and the actual durability of a finished television will depend on its panel design, usage patterns, and protective features.

Modern OLED televisions already use technologies such as pixel-cleaning routines, screen savers, and logo-brightness adjustments to reduce the risk.

FLiPP Could Also Reduce OLED Manufacturing Costs

Better picture quality and durability are not the only potential advantages.

LG Display says FLiPP can improve the efficiency of its manufacturing process by reducing the limitations associated with conventional metal masks.

The company demonstrated that its process could manufacture OLED panels using an entire 8.5-generation mother glass substrate rather than relying on divided sections.

According to LG Display, this approach can improve mother-glass utilization efficiency by up to 64% compared with certain existing manufacturing methods.

Less wasted material and more flexible production could help reduce manufacturing costs over time. If those savings are passed on to consumers, future OLED televisions and monitors could become more affordable.

However, lower retail prices are not guaranteed, as they will also depend on production investment, component costs, demand, and competition.

When Will FLiPP OLED Screens Arrive?

Despite the promising specifications, consumers should not expect FLiPP-equipped televisions to appear immediately.

LG Display has said it plans to introduce the technology first in IT products such as tablets and monitors before expanding it to other categories, including wearable devices and ultra-large televisions.

A separate report from TechRadar indicates that monitor and laptop panel production could begin around late 2027. That remains a projected timeline rather than a confirmed retail launch date.

The technology could eventually support displays ranging from very small wearable screens to televisions measuring up to 100 inches, according to LG Display's announcement.

This flexibility could make FLiPP useful across several product categories, including monitors, laptops, tablets, televisions, and potentially VR and AR displays.

What FLiPP Could Mean for the Future of OLED TVs

LG Display's FLiPP technology represents an important development in OLED manufacturing. Its reported improvements in brightness, lifespan, power efficiency, and production flexibility could help address several long-standing limitations of the technology.

The biggest question is how well these laboratory and manufacturing results will translate into commercial products.

For now, FLiPP is a promising development rather than a feature consumers can purchase in an LG television. Its initial applications are expected to focus on smaller displays, with televisions potentially benefiting later.

If LG successfully brings the technology into large-scale production, future OLED screens could become brighter, more durable, and potentially less expensive to manufacture.
