WhatsApp Adds Recent Media Suggestions for Faster Photo and Video Sharing
WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that could make everyday photo and video sharing noticeably quicker.
Called Recent Media Suggestions, the feature can recommend the latest media saved in a user's phone gallery when they open a WhatsApp conversation. Instead of opening the gallery and searching for a recently captured or downloaded file, users can access the suggested media directly from the chat interface.
The feature is currently rolling out gradually to users on Android and iOS, so it may not appear on every account immediately.
How WhatsApp's Recent Media Suggestions Work
The feature is designed around one simple idea: if you have just saved a photo or video and then open a chat, WhatsApp can suggest that media as a quick sharing option.
WhatsApp is currently using two different interface designs for the feature.
In one version, a small notification appears above the chat bar with a thumbnail of the most recent media and an option to share it.
In another version, WhatsApp temporarily replaces the camera button in the chat bar with a thumbnail representing the suggested media.
Users will receive one of these interface variations rather than both.
Suggested Media Isn't Sent Automatically
One important part of the feature is that WhatsApp does not immediately send the suggested photo or video when it is tapped.
Instead, the selected media opens in WhatsApp's editing interface. Users can review it before deciding whether to send it.
They can also add a caption, stickers or other available edits before sharing. If they tapped the suggestion accidentally, they can simply exit without sending anything.
This extra step is particularly useful because the latest item in a phone's gallery may not always be something a user intended to share.
WhatsApp Can Suggest More Than Camera Photos
The feature isn't limited to pictures taken with the smartphone camera.
WhatsApp can suggest the most recently added media item from the device's gallery, regardless of where it came from.
That could include:
- Photos taken with the camera
- Screenshots
- Downloaded images
- Images saved from other apps
- Recently saved videos
- Other media appearing in the phone's gallery
The system essentially looks for the most recent media rather than restricting suggestions to a particular source or file type.

Users Can Turn the Feature Off
Not everyone will want WhatsApp automatically suggesting media when they open conversations.
WhatsApp therefore provides an option to disable the feature. Users who don't want these recommendations can go into WhatsApp Settings > Chats and turn off Recent media suggestions.
Once disabled, WhatsApp will stop displaying these media recommendations in chats.
The Feature Is Still Rolling Out
Recent Media Suggestions isn't available to every WhatsApp user yet.
The feature is being introduced gradually on both Android and iOS, with availability expanding to more accounts over the coming weeks. Installing the latest WhatsApp version may be necessary, but even users on the newest version may have to wait until the feature is enabled for their account.
WhatsApp has not provided a specific date for when the feature will become available to everyone.
A Small Change That Could Save Time
Recent Media Suggestions isn't a major change to WhatsApp's messaging system, but it addresses a common everyday task.
When users frequently send recently captured photos, screenshots or downloaded files, opening the gallery every time can become repetitive. Putting the latest media directly within the conversation could remove a few steps from the process.
At the same time, the editing screen and optional setting help prevent the feature from becoming an accidental-sharing problem.
As WhatsApp continues adding small convenience features to its Android and iOS apps, Recent Media Suggestions is another example of the platform trying to make common actions faster without completely changing the existing chat experience.
