Millennials Are Using AI More Than Gen Z — Here’s Why

Th10 06, 2026  Chaudhry Arslan  4 lượt xem

For years, Gen Z has been considered the generation most comfortable with new technology. But when it comes to artificial intelligence, the picture may be changing.

New research suggests that Millennials are now using generative AI at a higher rate than Gen Z, challenging the assumption that younger users automatically lead every new technology trend.

According to recent data, about 47.2% of Millennials use generative AI, compared with 44.3% of Gen Z. Gen X follows at 42.4%, while Baby Boomers remain at 32.2%.

The difference may be relatively small, but it highlights an important shift in how different generations are adopting AI.

Millennials Are Becoming Heavy AI Users

Millennials grew up during the transition from traditional technology to the internet, smartphones and cloud computing. Many are now in established careers where AI tools can directly affect productivity.

For this generation, AI isn't necessarily a futuristic technology. It has increasingly become a practical workplace tool.

Millennials commonly use AI assistants for tasks such as:

  • Writing and editing emails
  • Researching information
  • Summarizing documents
  • Generating ideas
  • Creating images
  • Analyzing information
  • Writing or improving content
  • Automating repetitive tasks

YouGov's 2026 data also shows Millennials reporting relatively high use of AI for generating ideas, summarizing content, creating images and writing emails.

Why Millennials May Be Ahead of Gen Z

One possible explanation is the role AI plays in the workplace.

Many Millennials occupy mid-career positions where AI can immediately provide practical benefits. They may already be responsible for managing projects, communicating with customers, analyzing information or producing content.

AI can help them complete these tasks faster.

For example, an employee can use an AI assistant to create a first draft of an email, summarize a long report or generate ideas for a presentation. The person still makes the final decisions, but AI can reduce the amount of time spent on repetitive work.

Research from Ipsos also found that 65% of Millennials said AI had saved them time at work, compared with 68% of Gen Z, 57% of Gen X and 46% of Baby Boomers.

Gen Z Is Still a Major AI User

The fact that Millennials are slightly ahead doesn't mean Gen Z is avoiding AI.

Gen Z remains one of the most active groups when it comes to artificial intelligence.

A 2025 Yahoo/YouGov survey found that 82% of Gen Z adults had used an AI chatbot, compared with 68% of Millennials, 54% of Gen X and 33% of Baby Boomers.

The difference between those results and newer generative-AI adoption figures shows why survey methodology matters. Different studies measure different things, such as whether someone has ever used an AI chatbot, whether they used generative AI recently, or whether they use AI at work.

Gen Z Has a More Complicated Relationship With AI

Gen Z may be comfortable experimenting with AI while simultaneously being more concerned about its consequences.

Young workers are entering the job market at a time when companies are rapidly adopting AI automation. This creates a difficult situation: AI can help them become more productive, but it could also change the types of entry-level jobs available to them.

Recent research shows that younger generations can be both enthusiastic users and concerned observers of AI.

That combination may help explain why Gen Z doesn't necessarily translate its high awareness of AI into the highest overall adoption rate in every survey.

Millennials See AI as a Productivity Tool

For many Millennials, AI is increasingly viewed as a digital assistant or coworker rather than simply a technology to experiment with.

The distinction is important.

Someone might use an AI chatbot occasionally to ask a question. A professional using AI every day to summarize meetings, write emails, analyze spreadsheets or prepare presentations is integrating the technology much more deeply into their routine.

This type of workplace integration could give Millennials a significant reason to adopt AI.

AI Use Is Different Across Generations

AI adoption isn't just about how often people use the technology. What people use AI for also differs considerably by age.

YouGov data shows that Gen Z is particularly active in creative and technical applications, including generating ideas, creating images, proofreading and writing code. Millennials also report substantial use of AI for these tasks.

Older generations tend to use AI more selectively, particularly for information searches and recommendations.

Pew Research's 2026 study similarly found that adults under 50 are considerably more likely than older adults to use chatbots for searching for information, work, entertainment and other purposes.

ChatGPT Remains the Most Popular AI Chatbot

Across generations, ChatGPT continues to be one of the most widely used AI tools.

Pew Research's 2026 survey found that 44% of U.S. adults had used ChatGPT, compared with 24% for Gemini, 17% for Copilot and 14% for Meta AI. Usage was substantially higher among younger adults.

Among adults aged 30 to 49, 55% reported using ChatGPT, compared with 61% among those aged 18 to 29.

This shows that Millennials and younger Gen X users are major contributors to the growing AI ecosystem.

AI Is Becoming Part of Everyday Work

The growing adoption of AI among Millennials reflects a broader transformation in the workplace.

AI is increasingly being used for:

  • Customer support
  • Marketing
  • Software development
  • Research
  • Data analysis
  • Graphic design
  • Content creation
  • Business planning
  • Administrative tasks
  • Education and training

Instead of replacing every task, AI often works alongside employees by handling repetitive or time-consuming parts of a job.

That may be particularly attractive to workers who already understand traditional digital tools and can easily add AI to their existing workflows.

The Generational AI Gap May Continue to Change

AI adoption is moving so quickly that today's generational rankings may look different next year.

Gen Z has grown up surrounded by smartphones, social media and digital platforms. Millennials experienced the transition from desktop computers and early internet services to smartphones and cloud computing.

Both generations therefore have strong reasons to adopt AI.

The difference may ultimately depend less on age and more on how useful AI is for a person's work, education and everyday life.

Final Thoughts

The idea that Gen Z automatically leads every technology trend is being challenged by the rapid adoption of generative AI.

Recent research indicates that Millennials can be particularly strong AI users, with some datasets placing their generative-AI adoption slightly ahead of Gen Z.

However, Gen Z remains highly engaged with AI and often uses it for creative, educational and technical tasks.

The bigger story is that AI adoption is spreading across every generation. Millennials may currently have an advantage in workplace adoption, while Gen Z continues to experiment with new AI applications.

As AI becomes increasingly integrated into smartphones, computers, workplaces and online services, the difference between generations may eventually become less important than the ability to use these tools effectively.
