WhatsApp is working on a major change that could make its Android interface simpler. WhatsApp is testing a new option to move Channels from the Updates tab to the Chats tab.
The feature is still under development and is not currently available to beta testers. According to WABetaInfo, the change was spotted in WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.26.39.1.
With the planned update, users will be able to access their followed channels from the same area where they normally view their conversations. WhatsApp is also testing different ways to organize channels inside the Chats tab.
The messaging app is developing a migration tool that will ask users where they want their channels to appear. One option will move followed channels directly into the Chats list.
Another option will automatically archive the channels. Users will still be able to move them into the Chats tab later if they change their minds.
This approach could give users more control over how their inbox is organized. People who frequently use Channels can keep them easily accessible, while those who prefer a cleaner chat list can keep them separate.
WhatsApp is Testing Three Layouts
The company is currently experimenting with three different ways to display Channels in the Chats tab.
In the first layout, channels will appear directly alongside regular conversations in the main chat list. Users will also be able to use a Channels filter at the top of the interface. Channels would remain visible in the All inbox as well.
The second layout would keep channels out of the All inbox. They would only appear when users select the Channels filter, helping keep regular conversations separate.
The third option would create a dedicated Channels folder within the Chats tab. Users could open this section to view all the channels they follow.
WhatsApp has not yet confirmed which of these layouts will eventually be introduced to everyone.
Updates Tab Could Be Removed
Moving Channels to the Chats tab could also lead to another major interface change. WhatsApp is expected to remove the Updates tab once Channels are moved.
Status updates have already started appearing at the top of the Chats tab for some users. If Channels also move there, the separate Updates section may no longer be needed.
WhatsApp could then replace the Updates tab with a Contacts tab. The new section would allow users to find contacts and see which people are currently online.
Feature is Under Development
The new Channels arrangement is currently being tested internally on Android. It has not yet been released to the public or made available to beta testers.
WhatsApp is expected to test different layouts with users before deciding how Channels should appear in the Chats tab. The company has not announced a release date for the feature.
For now, Android users will continue to find Channels in the Updates tab. The final design may also change before WhatsApp makes the feature available more widely.
