Call of Duty Gets Its Own Counter-Strike-Style Mode as Modern Warfare 4 Adds Collateral

Oct 01, 2026  Chaudhry Arslan  6 views

The Modern Warfare 4 Collateral mode is Activision’s most direct answer yet to Counter-Strike and Valorant. Players start each round with a pistol and some cash and spend what they earn on everything else.

It is a clear change of philosophy for a series built on fast respawns and custom loadouts. In Collateral, a bad round can leave a team with nothing but pistols.

How Collateral works

The structure will be familiar to Call of Duty’s Search and Destroy fans. Teams take turns attacking and defending two bomb sites, and every player begins a round with the same pistol and the same starting amount of money.

Cash comes from eliminating opponents and completing objectives. Between rounds, players spend it on armor, perks, equipment, and weapons.

The rule that shapes everything is simple. Purchased gear is lost on death, but the money stays. A player who dies can keep a full wallet and rebuild next round, which makes every purchase a bet.

What Activision removed

Collateral is defined as much by what is missing as by what is added. According to the source report, the mode has no respawns, no automatic health regeneration, no custom classes, and almost no killstreaks.

The one exception is the Recon UAV, which the whole team must buy together. Other reports describe this as a team-buy option for pooling cash.

Perks stay, but in a smaller set, and each one must be bought with in-game money. The shop covers five areas.

Not Call of Duty’s first attempt

This is not the first time the series has borrowed from the genre. Treyarch’s Heist mode in 2018’s Black Ops 4 also put a cash-based spin on competitive play, and Modern Warfare 4 will include a second cash-based mode, Inflation, a Team Deathmatch-style mode from last month’s beta.

Two economy modes in one game suggest Activision sees money management as a feature to build on, not a one-off experiment. Collateral is the stricter of the two.

What is still unclear

Several questions are open. Modern Warfare 4 launches on October 23 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC, but a report from Insider Gaming says Activision described Collateral as PC-only, so console availability is not confirmed.

Activision has also not said whether Collateral will appear in Call of Duty esports. The mode is aimed at Search and Destroy players and the more competitive part of the community, but there is no confirmation of an esports role. The starting cash amounts and earning rates have not been published either.

Adding a buy menu is the easy part. Counter-Strike and Valorant have spent years tuning their economies so that a losing team can still compete without being locked out entirely.

Collateral has to get that balance right with Call of Duty’s own weapons and pacing, and with no way to see the numbers before launch. The mode’s success will depend on how much cash a lost round leaves a team and how fast one strong round can snowball.

It also tests a bigger idea. Call of Duty is taking the best-known structure from its competitors and removing its own signature features to fit it. If players embrace that, the series may keep building modes that look less like Call of Duty and more like its rivals.
