Pakistani freelancers earned a record $197 million in export receipts in September 2026, marking the highest monthly earnings in the country’s history. The strong performance pushed their total earnings during the first quarter of fiscal year 2026-27 to approximately $550 million.
According to figures shared by Adviser to the Finance Minister Khurram Schehzad, freelance earnings increased by 11% compared with August and rose 49% from September 2025. Total earnings for the July-September quarter also increased by 46% compared with the same period last year.
Schehzad said Pakistan’s growing freelance economy was turning the skills of young digital professionals into export revenue and foreign exchange earnings without adding to the country’s debt.
Pakistani Freelancers Set New Monthly Export Earnings Record in September 2026
The latest figures reflect a strong start to the current fiscal year. Pakistani freelancers earned $175.44 million in July 2026, while their combined earnings for July and August reached approximately $352 million.
The record $197 million earned in September further strengthened this performance, taking first-quarter receipts to around $550 million.
Pakistan’s freelance sector has also recorded significant growth over the past fiscal year. Freelancers earned a total of $1.76 billion in FY2025-26, highlighting the increasing role of online work in the country’s digital economy.
The growth also comes as Pakistan’s broader information technology sector continues to expand. IT exports reached $435 million in September 2026, marking their second-highest monthly level on record.
Limited Jobs Drive More Professionals Toward Freelancing
Pakistan Freelancers Association (PAFLA) Chairman Ibrahim Amin said the continued increase in earnings showed that more Pakistani digital professionals were participating in the international freelance market.
He noted that many IT graduates and experienced professionals were turning to freelancing because of limited job opportunities in the domestic market.
Online platforms allow these professionals to offer services to international clients and earn income in foreign currencies. This income helps them support their families while contributing to Pakistan’s foreign exchange earnings.
Freelancing also provides an alternative source of employment for the country’s growing workforce, particularly for people with skills in software development, graphic design, digital marketing, and other technology-related fields.

Skills Development Could Boost Future Earnings
Industry representatives believe Pakistan can further expand its freelance economy by investing in professional training, skills development, and support services for digital workers.
Better access to training and international markets could help more Pakistanis secure projects from overseas clients and increase the value of their services.
The latest record highlights the growing contribution of freelancers to Pakistan’s export earnings. Continued investment in digital skills and improved support for independent professionals could help the country strengthen its position in the global freelance market and generate additional foreign exchange in the coming years.
